Name: Arnold Zable
The author of 'Café Scheherazade', 'The Fig Tree', 'Wanderers
and Dreamers', 'Jewels and Ashes' and most recently, 'Scraps of Heaven'.
During the 1970s, Arnold lectured in both social sciences and environmental
studies at the University of Melbourne. Arnold has won numerous awards
in literature, and now teaches creative writing and works as a freelance
journalist.
His literature explores themes of ethnicity, race, memory, community
and the tapestry of cultural identity, and these themes transfer to his
work with immigrant and indigenous communities. Arnold speaks passionately
about displacement, community, indigenous education and contemporary concepts
of 'multiculturalism'. Arnold is active as Melbourne PEN International's
spokesman on refugee issues and also dedicates much of his time to working
with refugees in detention.
